Habits to make you happier at the office

Habits can be definted as a settled tendency or usual manner of behavior; or an acquired mode of behavior that has become nearly or completely involuntary (Merriam-Webster). They are the things we do on auto-pilot, the small choices we make from what we eat for breakfast to the route we take to work.

Habits can be defined as 'a settled tendency or usual manner of behavior; or an acquired mode of behavior that has become nearly or completely involuntary' (Merriam-Webster).  They are the things we do on auto-pilot, the small choices we make everyday from what we eat for breakfast to the route we take to work.

Successful professionals have all sorts of habits and are deliberate about their work behaviors. It is this intention that makes a difference in their productivity and happiness.  Here are a few habits that we think can go a long way to making you happier at work.

Get enough sleep | Yep, that's right! Getting enough sleep is one of the ways to be happier at work. Did you know that less than seven hours of sleep a night has been linked to a variety of health risks and diseases, regardless of the effect it has on productivity. So put down those devices, turn off the TV and get some sleep.

Get rid of the mental clutter | Mental clarity is a precious resource. Our brains process tons of information, and if we’re not careful, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. So resist the temptation to check social media on your break.  Take a walk instead. It’s not only a good work habit, but it’s a great way to be active.

Make a plan | A day of intention = a day of productivity. Rather than racing around trying to put out the latest fire, make an action list for the day that prioritizes the most challenging and pressing tasks.

Be organized | If your office looks like a paper factory just blew up, set aside a block of time to get it straightened out. File documents away for future reference and toss what is no longer relevant. Create a system for dealing with mail, emails, and reports so you don’t get bogged down in paperwork.

Stay Hydrated and Eat Well | Contrary to popular opinion, starting your day with coffee and a donut is not the choice of champions. The fuel you put in your body determines the quality of your energy. So, be sure to get a blend of carbs, proteins, and fats. Drink lots of and remember that the vending machine is not your friend.

In summary, pay attention to your happiness at work. Good work habits like a positive attitude and a healthy lifestyle go a long way towards being more productive and having a better work experience. So go get your rest, eat well, stay focused, get rid of clutter, be organized and make a plan.
